Eric The Dog

EricailCane’s “We Were Living in the Woods” exhibit opens today in San Fransisco at FIFTY24SF GALLERY on 218 Fillmore Street and will feature works on paper and on-site installations.

For those of you unfamiliar with EricailCane he’s been a major contributor to an increasingly progressive and elaborate street art and mural movement occurring in Europe over the past 5 years, gaining international recognition for his anthropomorphic building-sized animal murals throughout Italy and the continent. With fellow contemporaries Blu, Sam3, Escif, and San, Erica’s large-scale murals have been viewed as fine art done within the public’s view.

Born and studied in Bologna, Italy, Erica’s evolution to gallery work has seen depictions of animals in unique, human situations rendered in Victorian-like style illustrations, etchings, and short animated films. The art is often described as imagery from a dark fairy tale, in which animals are shown within the darkness of human nature, focusing on themes of alienation, satire, existentialism. Both gallery and mural work has also been hailed as influential works advocating vegetarianism and animal rights.

EricailCane (translated Eric the Dog) did this wall as a part of the PicTurin Festival, which is a major international event of mural art, which will contribute to the regeneration of certain areas of Turin, involving national and international artists who will be able to compete with local expertise. PicTurin, which started in early October and lasts two months, will bring in artists such as Turin Aryz, Dome, Grito, Morcky, Nychos, Roa, Sagua, Sat, Spok, ZEDZ, XTRM, to name only the international ones. The city, from downtown to the suburbs, will be overwhelmed by a wave of color and images on blank walls and a dozen other city spaces, for a total of over 3,500 square meters of murals painted surfaces.

The building may look familiar but the art work should not. It seems Lisbon attracts all of the freshest street artists, Os Gemeos and Blu teamed up on this same building earlier this year, now Ericailcane and Lucy McLauchlan take the baton so to speak.
